Set the base folder

Choose the folder Turret clones GitHub repositories into, and sign in to GitHub for the private ones.

You want to start a session by naming a GitHub repository, and Turret has no base folder yet.

  1. A new install opens the Choose a base folder step by itself, after the vendor gate.
  2. The step comes before the Welcome screen, because it decides where repositories live.
  3. The field already holds the folder Turret suggests. It is the Repos folder in your home directory.
  4. Type another path, or press Choose… and pick a folder from the dialog.
  5. Press Continue. The folder is stored and the step closes.
  6. Skip for now, the ✕ and the Escape key close the step and store nothing.

The sidebar keeps offering the step until a folder is set. On an install that has been used before, it draws a notice above the update panel with a button that opens the same step. The folder icon on the collapsed rail opens it too.

What the folder decides

Sessions started from a repository name open in that repository's own folder under the base folder. The first time a repository is named, Turret clones it there.

A session started from a path is unaffected by the setting. Changing the base folder moves nothing: a checkout already cloned stays where it is.

Signing in

A public repository clones without any sign-in. Signing in lets Turret clone your private repositories, and lets the New Session screen list them to pick from.

The same sign-in reaches git and gh inside sessions started afterwards.

  1. Press Sign in with GitHub. The code is copied, and GitHub's device page opens.
  2. Paste the code on that page and approve the request.
  3. The block reads Signed in as with your account name within a few seconds.

If it does not, switch back to Turret. The block reads the sign-in again whenever the window takes focus.

The code expires fifteen minutes after it is issued. Press Get a new code to ask for a fresh code.

A request refused on GitHub's page stores nothing. Sign out removes the stored token, and asks nothing first.

Setting it later

Settings' General tab opens with a Base folder section: the same field, with Save.

Press Save or Enter to write it. Nothing is written as you type, because a path half typed names a folder Turret would start cloning into.

A GitHub section sits under it with the same sign-in block. See Start a session on a folder for the Repository target, and Change another machine's settings for setting the folder on a paired machine.
