Write a permission rule

Add an Allow, ask or deny rule for a Claude tool without waiting for a session to ask first.

You know which Claude tool and pattern to allow, ask about or deny. You want to store the rule directly, rather than wait for a session to ask.

  1. Open Settings and the Claude tab.
  2. Scroll to Allow List.
  3. Choose a Project for the rule, or Every project.
  4. Type the tool's name into Tool, written the way Claude Code names it.
  5. Type a pattern into Pattern, or leave it blank to cover every call to that tool.
  6. Set Behaviour to Allow, Ask or Deny.
  7. Read the line under the fields, showing the exact rule and scope about to be stored.
  8. Press Add rule.

The new rule appears under its project's own heading, or under Every project.

See Permission rule syntax for what each field accepts and why the form can refuse a rule. See Answer a permission request for the other way a rule gets written, from a session's own ask.
